Cardiff Post Article February 2006
I was deeply concerned to receive a telephone call from a resident from Cardiff who did not know where to get advice and help on “growing older.” Anyone who would like help or an assessment, please contact me and I will put you in touch with the relevant organisations to assist.
A campaign for the over 65’s has been running since September 2005, organised by the Welsh Assembly Government. It draws on a wide range of initiatives from government and the voluntary sector, into one over arching programme. This campaign will hopefully enable people to keep well over the colder months and beyond.
There are three main strands to the campaign: keep well, keep warm and keep safe.
In order to keep well, it is suggested that you contact your GP for a free flu jab (for the over 65’s). Eat a varied and balanced diet – to get a free guide, please contact the Food Standards Agency in Wales : 029 20678999. If you would like health advice and information, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, telephone NHS Direct on 08454647.
The Home Energy Efficiency Scheme may be able to insulate a home or install central heating for free. To find out more information, please telephone freephone 0800 316 2815. If you need financial help to keep your home warm, please contact the Pension Service on 0800 991234.
If you are worried about slipping or tripping in your home, have you considered installing grab rails, level shower access and suitable lighting? For more information please contact me. Alternatively, Care and Repair Cymru offers advice and practical assistance with repair, grants and adaptations. For more information please telephone 029 2057 6286.
If I can help in any way, please do not hesitate to contact me 029 2062 7757 / 079 7001 3332 or E-Mail jcowan@cardiff.gov.uk
