101 - Cardiff's non emergency number

A new number is now available to Cardiff’s residents, wanting to report problems in their area that really affect the way that they feel about the place in which they live.

A partnership service provided by Cardiff Council and South Wales Police, ‘101’ is an easy to remember number, that people living in the city can call to report…

* Vandalism and graffiti

This includes vandalism to street furniture, damage to private property, bus shelters or telephone kiosks.

It also includes graffiti of a racist or homophobic nature.

* Drunken and rowdy behaviour

This includes groups of people drinking in the street, groups of people (including youths) causing annoyance or being rowdy, or problems which occur outside or near public houses or other licensed premises.

* Broken street lighting

This includes all reports of defective or damaged street lighting.

 * Drugs related anti-social behaviour

This includes reports of found needles or other drug paraphernalia.

It also includes reports of drug dealing or drug related activity. However, if this activity is in progress, callers should ring the police directly.

* Abandoned vehicles

This includes reports of vehicles which have been stolen or burnt out.

It also includes reports of vehicle obstruction.

* Dumping and fly tipping
This includes reports of ‘fly-tipping’ and illegal dumping; bins which have been toppled in the street; litter which has been strewn over the ground and any other build-up of rubbish which is potentially a hazard.

* Noisy neighbours and loud parties

 This includes complaints relating to loud music, noisy parties, inconsiderate DIY or disputes between neighbours where the root cause is noise.

* Intimidation and Harassment

This includes domestic disputes which involve harassment, racial or homophobic intimidation.

It also includes incidents where members of the public feel intimidated by groups of people (including youths) in the street.

Cardiff is one of only five areas in Britain chosen to pilot the ‘101’ service, with national roll-out of Single Non-Emergency Number scheduled for 2008.  The other areas are Hampshire, Northumbria, Sheffield and Leicester
