Surfing Down Under to Cardiff Online

By: Cardiff county council

An encounter with online technology Down Under spurred a sprightly adult learner to sign up for one of Cardiff Council’s many adult and community learning courses.

Cardiff resident Gwyn Butcher was recently visiting relatives in Australia when he was amazed that his homeward bus ticket from Heathrow airport to Cardiff could be booked online from the other side of the world.

The 93-year-old former engineer, who travelled the world with his job, was so impressed that he decided to learn more about computers and the internet on his return home and promptly enrolled on one of the many computer courses which take place at community centres across Cardiff.

Mr Butcher is progressing well every Monday on the 10-week ‘Computers for the Terrified’ course at Eastmoors Community Centre in Splott and has gained the confidence to want his own computer. He soon hopes to be surfing the internet and keeping in touch with his family overseas via email.

He said: “Staff at the centre have been so helpful, patient and very kind. I’ve learned a great deal and made new friends”.

Executive Member for Education and Lifelong Learning, Cllr Bill Kelloway said: “Mr Butcher is a shining example of the fact that it’s never too late to learn.”

Adult and Community learning opportunities are offered at various locations across the city with a chance to learn about aromatherapy, computing, arts and crafts, languages and much, much more.

There are hundreds of courses available, some leading to a qualification to help you progress in work or simply ones that teach a new hobby or past time. There are also specialised courses for people with a disability, learners needing support with their numeracy and literacy and English for Speakers of Other Languages.
